Laser Hair Removal Pre & Post Care Instructions

Laser hair removal works by targeting pigment in the hair follicle. Preparation and sun protection are important for comfort, safety, and long-term reduction.

Quick note

Mild redness or swelling around the follicles can happen and usually improves within 24 hours to a few days.

Before laser hair removal

  • Shave the treatment area at least 24 hours before your appointment. Do not wax, tweeze, or pluck during your series.
  • Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanning products for 2 to 4 weeks before treatment.
  • Arrive with clean skin free of makeup, lotion, moisturizer, deodorant, oils, or fragrance on the treatment area.
  • Avoid strenuous activity for at least 2 hours before your appointment.
  • Tell us about new medications, especially anything that may increase photosensitivity.

During your appointment

  • Protective laser eyewear is required throughout treatment.
  • Your provider will assess the skin, treatment area, hair density, and comfort level before choosing settings.
  • A small test spot may be performed when appropriate.
  • You may feel a quick snapping or warming sensation. Tell us if the sensation feels too intense.

After laser hair removal

  • Use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily for at least 7 days.
  • Avoid direct sun, tanning beds, hot tubs, saunas, hot showers, intense workouts, and tight clothing on the same day.
  • Use a cold compress, aloe, over-the-counter hydrocortisone, or an oral antihistamine if recommended for redness or irritation.
  • Do not pick at shedding hairs. Gentle exfoliation about one week after treatment can help the natural shedding process.

Treatment progress

  • Hair can shed gradually over 1 to 3 weeks after treatment.
  • Most patients need a consistent series for best reduction because hair grows in cycles.
  • Stay on your recommended schedule so each session can target active follicles.
